2022 Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid (review)

The all-new 2022 Hyundai Tucson debuted last month with a new daring design that helps it stand out in the crowded mid-size SUV class as well as plenty of new technology. Under the hood, the new Tucson is available with a 2.5-liter direct-injected gasoline engine with 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque or a more efficient hybrid 1.6-liter turbo producing around 177 hp and 195 lb-ft. Hyundai is even considering launching a high-performance Tucson N for the first time ever.

In another first, the new Tucson is also getting the plug-in hybrid treatment to take on the Toyota RAV4 Prime. The PHEV variant packs a 1.6-liter T-GDi Smartstream engine paired with a 66.9-kW electric motor and a 13.8-kWh lithium-polymer battery. Combined, this setup produces 265 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to a standard four-wheel-drive system through a six-speed automatic transmission. For a smoother ride, an optional Electronically Controlled Suspension system with adaptive damping technology is also available.

“The plug-in hybrid powertrain represents a new milestone in the Tucson range. With gasoline and diesel mild hybrid, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options, the all-new Tucson offers the widest range of electrified powertrains in its segment. This is just the latest proof of Hyundai’s commitment to electro-mobility,” said Andreas-Christoph Hofmann Vice President Marketing & Product at Hyundai Motor Europe.

To minimize drag and maximize fuel efficiency, the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid is equipped with an active air flap that adjusts the air intakes depending on factors such as the engine coolant temperature and vehicle speed. When running on pure electric power, the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid will last over 31 miles on a single charge.

Equipped with a 7.2-kW on-board charger, the SUV can be charged at an EV charging station or a home wall box. Adding a high-voltage battery hasn’t compromised the Tucson’s practicality, however, as the PHEV variant still offers generous cargo space and legroom.

Rear passengers can stretch out with 37.5 inches of legroom, while cargo space has increased compared to the previous Tucson, with an overall luggage capacity of 558 liters with the seats up and up to 1,737 liters with the seats folded. While the regular Tucson comes with an eight-inch screen as standard, the optional 10.25-inch touchscreen is equipped as standard in the PHEV along with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster. The new Tucson Plug-in Hybrid will be available in Europe in spring 2021 and in the US in summer 2021.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime Plug-in Hybrid (overview)

Toyota’s best-selling RAV4 crossover went through a major redesign in 2018, which repositioned the hybrid as the most powerful variant in the lineup. With more power than its gasoline counterpart, the RAV4 Hybrid ended up being the smoother and more competent of the two models. Now, for the 2021 model year, Toyota is taking the superiority of the RAV4 Hybrid and cranking it up another notch with a new model called the RAV4 Prime.

Like the Prius Prime, the 2021 RAV4 Prime is a plug-in hybrid. This means the Prime is capable of running with the gasoline and electric motors working in concert or using only the electric motors for up to 42 miles. It also includes more powerful electric motors, bumping the total output to 302 horsepower, and making this the most powerful RAV4 model Toyota has ever built. In the compact plug-in hybrid crossover space, the RAV4 Prime will only face competition from the Ford Escape PHEV, which wins on efficiency but loses on power and performance. Toyota gave us an early opportunity to drive the RAV4 Prime and it immediately became apparent that this is now the RAV4 to get.

What’s New For 2021?

The Toyota RAV4 Prime is the first-ever plug-in hybrid version of the popular RAV4. It’s also become the most powerful and quickest RAV4 thanks to the 302-horsepower combined output from the combination of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine and electric motors. Paired with an electronic on-demand all-wheel-drive system and a continuously variable transmission, it accelerates to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds. Despite this potent performance, Toyota says it is also the most fuel-efficient RAV4 ever with a preliminary EPA rating of 94 MPGe, a 600-mile total range, and a 42-mile range on electric power alone. The RAV4 Prime comes well-equipped with a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a 120V charging cable, a pre-collision system, and dynamic radar cruise control.
