2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport (Review)

If Volkswagen’s three-row Atlas seems like a little too boxy, take a look at the swoopier Atlas Cross Sport. Offering seating for five with room to spare for cargo, the Cross Sport is only slightly less family-friendly than the seven-seat Atlas. Buyers can choose from either a 235-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder or the 276-hp 3.6-liter V-6; front-wheel drive is standard but VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive is available. The Cross Sport’s steeply raked rear window and coupe-like roofline make it the more stylish Atlas, but rivals such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Honda Passport

The Atlas Cross Sport is an all-new addition to the Volkswagen lineup for 2020, slotting into the same mid-size SUV segment as the regular Atlas on which it is based.
Pricing and Which One to Buy

S: $32,000 (est.)
SE: $36,000 (est.)
SEL: $42,000 (est.)
SEL R-Line: $45,000 (est.)
SEL Premium: $47,000 (est.)
SEL Premium R-Line: $50,000 (est.)

We’d suggest a mid-range SEL model, since it unlocks a lot of the Atlas Cross Sport’s best features, including a reconfigurable digital gauge display. We’d also recommend the V-6 engine versus the turbocharged four-cylinder. More information about the Cross Sport’s pricing and features will be available closer to its on-sale date in spring 2020.

The four-cylinder Atlas Cross Sport comes with EPA fuel-economy ratings of 21 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined for the front-wheel-drive model and 18, 23, and 20 mpg for the all-wheel-drive version. Fuel-economy estimates for the V-6–powered 2020 Atlas Cross Sport have not been published, nor have we had either version in our offices to test on our 200-mile real-world

Those familiar with the three-row Atlas will find the Atlas Cross Sport’s interior quite familiar, despite an updated steering wheel and stitched door panels. Adults should find comfortable seating positions in either of the SUV’s available rows of seats, but unlike the regular Atlas, the second row is offered strictly as a three-across bench. Cargo space is ample but we have yet to test how many carry-on suitcases will fit. We expect the Cross Sport to offer similar cargo space to the Ford Edge and the Hyundai Santa Fe.

All Atlas Cross Sport models come with a touchscreen infotainment display with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Navigation is optional, as is a reconfigurable digital gauge display and SiriusXM satellite radio. VW’s Car-Net connectivity app allows for remote starting and analytics while a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot allows occupants to remain connected to the internet with their smart devices while on the go.

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have released crash-test results for the 2020 Atlas Cross Sport. For what it’s worth, the 2020 Atlas three-row SUV received decent marks from both agencies. Volkswagen is equipping all Atlas Cross Sports with autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring as standard, but more advanced driver-assistance features will require buying a higher trim level. Key safety features include:

Standard autonomous emergency braking with forward-collision
warning
Standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
Available adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving
mode

While most mainstream brands start with a three-years or 36,000-miles warranty, Volkswagen offers a four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper policy. The powertrain warranty falls behind others that stretch to five or even ten years. To make up the difference, VW covers the first two years of scheduled maintenance.

Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 2 years or
20,000 miles
