Breaking from the design of the previous generation of Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptops, Dell has taken a sleeker, more streamlined aesthetic approach. Gone are the sometimes overbearing bright red highlights on the black body. Instead, Dell was more restrained with only the Dell logo on the exterior of the Matte Black model outlined in Dell’s Beijing Red color scheme. The 15.6-inch FHD display is held up by a hinge that’s centered on the laptop’s body, instead of snapping across the width of the housing.
A full-sized keyboard along with a number pad fits snugly inside the body of the laptop. In the top-right corner, just above the number pad, is the power button that pulls double-duty as a fingerprint sensor for Windows Hello.
Thanks to the keyboard’s shallow feel, I rather enjoyed typing on it. It reminded me of Apple’s wireless keyboard, though a bit softer and without the angle. The touchpad was, well, touchy, and often got confused between when I wanted a regular click or a right-click. Overall, the Inspiron 7000 Gaming’s benchmarks are respectable, considering they are just a few points behind the likes of the Razer Blade and Alienware 13. But there are two other major factors you have to consider — price and specs.
The only suggestion I would make is to forgo a model with a lone 256GB SSD and pick up a unit with an SSD and a 1TB HDD. In testing this review model laptop, I couldn’t install all of my benchmark apps and games due to running out of space on the SSD.
Benchmarks only tell part of the story, however, with real-world use telling the rest. Beyond slow loading times for games, I failed to experience any performance hiccups during my testing. On a few occasions while playing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, I noticed an odd graphical “wave” effect that when there was a lot of motion (running/fighting) going across the screen as I was driving a vehicle or running and shooting. This issue was limited to PUBG, however, and I failed to notice the same wave-effect in Epic’s Fortnite.
I found the display to be slightly oversaturated and not quite bright enough for my liking. I tend to prefer gaming (actually, any computer use) with brightness set as high as it can go.
Also with just two front-facing speakers, I constantly had to have the Inspiron 7000 Gaming at full volume to hear any approaching footsteps or shots in the distance. The fans aren’t terribly loud, but when they get whirling at full speed you know it.
Battery Life
At just over 2 hours of total battery life in our battery test, where a movie is looped until the battery runs out of juice, the Inspiron 7000 Gaming falls right in line with more expensive laptops.
